Matt Mancinelli, CEO of Eagle Children’s Charities, was the guest speaker at the Wednesday, May 17, evening meeting of Rotary of Grosse Pointe. He was welcomed by President Ted Everingham. Eagle Children’s Charities is made up of Soar Detroit, a tutoring program, and Eagle Sports Club, which provides sports leagues for Detroit children.
For 12 years, children from first to third grade have received one-on-one after school tutoring twice a week at Grace Community Church. This year, Soar Detroit is looking to expand the program from just the eastside to the entire city by working with Detroit and suburban churches to find more volunteers, students and locations to tutor.  It is also testing a pilot project to bring tutors into schools to have blocks of time to work with the students.
A professional staff prepares weekly lesson plans that each tutor then goes through with his/her student. How the tutor and child interact is tailored to the best way for the individual to learn.
