On November 12, we were joined by Mike McKay, founder of Heroes Movement, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting veterans through physical fitness and community. Mike grew up in Wyandotte, Michigan, and served four and a half years in the U.S. Navy before beginning a career in strength and conditioning. His experiences shaped a strong belief that a healthy body leads to a healthy mind.

Through Heroes Movement, Mike oversees training programs and builds partnerships with gyms across the country. The organization now works with gyms in 23 states to provide veterans with up to 12 free movement-based training sessions each month, offered indefinitely. These programs emphasize routine, self-improvement, and community while encouraging positive habits and improved mental health. Veterans are supported in small group settings to foster connection and accountability.

All partner gyms follow a movement-based workout model focused on personal growth rather than competition, with local supporters including Detroit Thrive at the Eastside Foundation Hockey Arena and “The Gym.” Heroes Movement is funded through donations and fundraising efforts; a gala will be held on January 24th from 5:30-10:00 p.m. at the War Memorial, with all proceeds benefiting veteran nonprofits and direct support. More information can be found at heroesmovementusa.org.

Thank you, Mike, for joining us!
