On September 30th, Keon Sims spoke on behalf of the Motor City Clubhouse, a psychosocial rehabilitation program at CNS Healthcare.
This week, our Rotary Club had the opportunity to hear from Keon Sims, a long time social-services professional and veteran of the United States Air Force. Keon currently serves as a supervisor at Motor City Clubhouse, a psychological rehabilitation program through CNS Healthcare.
Keon shared how the Clubhouse programs provide a supportive, welcoming community for people living with mental illness. Rather than focusing solely on clinical treatment, the Clubhouse model emphasizes the importance of building relationships, independence, employment, education, and meaningful participation within the community.
Another important part of Keon’s presentation was learning that the Clubhouse is not a treatment center or a place where members are judged or told what to do. Instead, it provides a welcoming environment where people can be themselves and receive the support they need.
Members learned that Motor City Clubhouse offers opportunities to volunteer and help out the program as much as possible. Things include participating in daily activities, community outings, employment opportunities, housing support, transportation, and other practical needs in people's daily lives. One of the most important themes from Keon's presentation was the value of acceptance and belonging. Clubhouse members aren't just patients or clients but they are welcomed as members of a community. The Clubhouse works to provide opportunities to contribute, develop skills, build confidence and independence in members enrolled in the program..
We thank Keon, for sharing her experiences and helping the Rotary members better understand the Clubhouse model and the impact we as a community can have on individuals if we take initiative to help out.
